ABOUT THIS COURSE
In 2017 6,949,000 women were using a modern method of
contraception. Because of that contraceptive use, 1,824,000 unintended
pregnancies were prevented, 349,000 unsafe abortions were
averted, and 1,000 maternal deaths were averted. Knowledge of
effective contraception & fertility planning is imperative to assist
patients.
The FPD course will prepare the Professional Nurse to render a family
planning clinical service.
The FPD course is aligned to the Department of Health guidelines and
is also aligned to 3-unit standards.
WHO SHOULD ENROL
Registered Nurses who are required to offer oral and injectable contraceptives
to their clients.
COURSE DESIGN
A 5-day interactive workshop with lectures and practical demonstrations.

service delivery guidelines & The national contraception, fertility

COURSE CONTENT
The course consists of 12 modules which includes all modern contraceptive
methods available in South Africa including:
• Contraception Policy, Guidelines & Protocols
• Professional & Ethical conduct
• Patient Rights, Values & Culture
• Principles of Counseling
• Drug Interaction
• Signs & Symptoms of STI’s
• Effective Monitoring & Evaluation
• Family Planning Methods
• Implanon Insertion
• Pap Smears
• IUCD Insertion
DURATION
5 days contact and
3 months to complete the POE & practical assessments
ASSESSMENT
• Theory - Multiple choice questionnaire paper
• Practical assessment on insertion of one Implanon and one
IUCD after completion of the POE
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
• Proof of SANC Registration as a Professional Nurse
• Booking is essential
• Payment must be settled before training is undertaken
ACCREDITATION
Accredited according to the HPCSA CPD Guidelines for Health
Professionals - for a total of 23 clinical points on Level 2.
CERTIFICATION
To qualify for the certificate of competence, participants should fully
attend the workshop, complete the theoretical and practical
assessment and successfully complete a Portfolio of Evidence.
