ABOUT THIS COURSE
HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) is now referred to HIV
Testing Services to embrace a range of services that should
be provided together with HIV testing. Responding to HIV
and AIDS is one of the most important tasks in South Africa,
which is why the prevention of new HIV infections and
treatment and care of HIV-infected people are one of the
South African government’s top priorities.
It is critical to identify HIV infection in people before they
develop an AIDS defining disease. And if HIV positive, on-going
counselling becomes the mandatory cornerstone in the longterm
medical management of HIV/AIDS. Advanced – level
HIV/AIDS counselling and testing has become a healthcare
discipline. A healthcare provider C&T skill plays an integral and
continuous role in the HIV/ AIDS medical management team.
WHO SHOULD ENROL
All Healthcare Professionals and Lay Counsellors who need to
acquire knowledge on the management of this condition as a
matter of urgency.
COURSE DESIGN
This course is a classroom course and participants will receive a
comprehensive and user-friendly study guide developed by
experts in the field covering all the modules. Subject matter
experts will be the faculty of the course.
COURSE CONTENT
• Overview of HIV / AIDS Disease Process
• Overview of Counselling process and effective
communication skills
• Legal and ethical issues including testing in children
• Gender Mainstreaming and Sex and Sexuality
related to HIV
• Pre-test Counselling and the Testing process
• Post-test Counselling HIV+ result and Post-test Counselling
HIV- result
• Record Keeping and Reporting
ASSESSMENT
Participants are assessed through means of a multiple-choice
questionnaire.
ACCREDITATION
Accredited according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board
Guidelines for Health Care Professionals for 30 CEU’s on Level 1.
STUDY MATERIAL
Your study material will be handed to you on the first day of the
workshop.
Additional materials which would assist participants in
diagnosing and managing HIV related conditions will also be
provided. National guidelines will be distributed whenever
they are available.
CERTIFICATION
To qualify for the certificate of completion for this short course,
participants should fully attend the workshop and successfully
complete the assessment process.
